It Was Intimidating and…. Exhilarating!

Storytelling is what we do…or so we think.  Last week Lucyah & I had the privilege of attending an incredibly creative and educational conference in Georgetown, Kentucky. To be surrounded by Christian storytellers from all over the country who have been doing this for fifteen to twenty-five years is a bit intimidating.  It’s a bit like being a beginning magician sitting at the feet of David Copperfield or Harry Houdini!

They take a simple Bible story like the account of Naaman the leper and humanize it, expand it…without adding or subtracting from the text….. and then add detail that you know exists but yet is never mentioned in the “normal” telling of the tale. We were mesmerized by Michael Foresteri!

I had the pleasure of sitting in on an intensive class (which simply means “all day on one subject”) with Don Falko, a man who is dedicated to finding the best in you no matter how hard you fight him!  He shared ways to learn stories and how to, not only tell them, but teach others how to tell them!

The most interesting thing about this experience was that these storytellers did not get puffed up with pride as I listened to them and looked up to them like teenager admiring his favorite rock star. Instead they humbled themselves as servants of God and  encouraged Lucy and I in what we do. They widened our horizons and deepened our thinking.

I was blessed doing the conference to get two hours of one on one time with Tom Taylor, a wonderful storyteller, musician and poet from Texas. It may have been the closest thing you could get to heaven this side of the pearly gates. He shared with me the creations of his spirit and I drank in every word, note and rhyme.

In three short days of basking in the Sonlight of these talented and creative  extensions of God’s love, my spirit moved from intimidated to exhilarated!  Next June they will gather again and Lucyah & I plan to be there….hope you will be too!
